Page Not Found when WordPress Category Tag matches Page name

If you are using permalinks like ” /%postname%/” and you have a category base name that happens to match a page name, any sub-pages under that page will return “not found” 404 messages.

The solution is to either change the category base name to something else, or change the permalink name on that page to something different.

Restore the WordPress Admin Menu

You are working in WordPress, suddenly you click and you menu on the left has shrunk! Ahh what happened. A small line with an arrow will shrink and expand this left hand menu when clicked. Simply click it again to restore the menu to its full size.

Redirect directory and contents using htaccess

How to redirect an entire directory and all internal files using the htaccess file.

In the example below the site moved from a standard static page website to a site powered by WordPress, and thus moved its images directory as shown below:

http://www.example.com/images/

http://www.example.com/wp-content/uploads/

(note: In WordPress, change your media settings by un-checking this box “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders”. This will keep all your uploads in a single folder.)

Twenty Ten and Featured Content Gallery

How to integrate the Featured Content Gallery plugin with the Twenty Ten theme from Word Press.

Activate the Twenty Ten theme in your blog.

Download, install, and activate the featured content gallery plugin. Add 2 featured items by following the plugin instructions.

Open the file header.php located inside the TwentyTen theme.

Look around line 77 to remove the default header image code for TwentyTen.

77	header_image(); ?>" width=" echo HEADER_IMAGE_WIDTH; ?>" height=" echo HEADER_IMAGE_HEIGHT; ?>" alt="" />

Then go down a few lines and look for:

Then place the featured content gallery code right below that:

81	include (ABSPATH . '/wp-content/plugins/featured-content-gallery/gallery.php'); ?>

It really works nice, with the navigation just below the featured content gallery.

Remember: The featured content gallery needs at least 2 featured items to work. So if you are seeing a blank spot, add 2 featured items.

This works with both TwentyTen 1.0 and 1.1 theme versions.

Frugal/Catalyst Theme Review

No more wasting my time searching for the right theme to use. I have found the end-all theme that is now my go-to theme for whichever flavor site I am building.

I am sure many of you follow the same process I would follow when starting a new website.

1. Have an idea for a new site.
2. Install and configure WordPress and install plug-ins.
3. Search for the perfect theme.

Now number 3 would always take lots of web searching, downloading, installing, activating, removing, over and over, no theme ever seemed to be just right.

Then I found the Frugal Theme. I found I can really make this theme into any look and feel I want all from within WordPress. Just about every single detail can be changed with a few clicks. It also has SEO built right in (which eliminates the need for SEO).

I have discovered that the more I use and dig into the frugal theme the more powerful it becomes. You will find out that Frugal is actually much much more than just a WordPress theme.

WordPress image uploader crashing Firefox

If you are having trouble with Firefox crashing when you go to try to upload an image using the WordPress flash-based image uploader. Here is a quick fix.

Go into your Firefox addons. (Tools – Add ons).

Find the Google Gears entry.

Click Disable button, and restart your Firefox Browser.

WordPress Automatic Update with 1and1

How to make the automatic update work with your WordPress blogs that are hosted on 1and1 shared servers. These are blogs that you set up yourself, not the blog that 1and1 can install for you.

The problem I was having was the update would start, and then just stop after a few seconds.

Then in my wp-content folder I would see a bunch of failed downloads. They were the update zip files with a 0 byte size.

The Solution:

Add the following lines to your .htaccess file in the root directory of your blog.

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

This will enable PHP version 5 + on your blog and then your update should take off.

The udpate to PHP 5 should also make your blog run a little faster and better.

Now that WP 3.0+ is out, it is a good time to test out the automatic upgrade!
